History of the ShowStoppers

In 2007 Vicki Smith created the 'ShowStoppers' with about 20 performers.  After two years of directing Vicki turned the torch over to Joanne DeWilde, who has continued to successfully direct and choreograph the group. The South County ShowStoppers are in their 10th year and going strong. The group is comprised of more than 40 volunteer senior citizens who perform variety shows with singing, dancing & comedy.  Among the costumed performers are comedians, guitar and keyboard players, belly dancers, line dancers, tap and hula dancers. There are male and female singers, plus the 'group singers' called the "Harmony Grits".   With ages ranging from 60 to 94 years young, all are energetic, enthusiastic and each share a commitment to oneself as well as to the community. The number and types of acts in a show is determined by the client’s needs.  New acts are constantly being added to the group’s repertoire.  As a result, every show is unique. The South County ShowStoppers' motto is, "We Aspire to Inspire before we Expire".Their reputation has grown tremendously and they’ve entertained at a large number of venues, including nursing homes, assisted living homes, senior centers, luncheons, county fairs and more. Phone calls keep coming in for show requests and the ShowStoppers are booked well in advance every year. The ShowStoppers gained County and Statewide recognition in 2011, as they were honored for their outstanding contributions in the field of aging & quality of life for senior citizens. The ShowStoppers are the winners of the 4th Annual Governor’s Leadership in Aging Award for the Performing Arts.

In 2017, Governor Hogan presented the Governor's Citation Award to the ShowStoppers and County Executive,  Steven Schuh, presented the Executive Citation to  the ShowStoppers.

Directions: From SCSC get onto Mayo Rd then take a right onto Solomons Island Rd /MD-2N. Merge onto US-50 E/US-301 N/MD-2 N toward Bay Bridge. Merge onto MD-2N/Ritchie Hwy via EXIT 27 toward Baltimore.  Destination is on the right just past W Campus Dr. Total travel time from SCSC is 25 minutes, 10.9 miles.

NMS Health Care, 900 Van Buren Street, Annapolis, MD 21403

Directions: From SCSC take a left on Stepneys Lane to stoplight. Turn left onto Mayo Rd and continue to Solomons Island Rd/MD-2. Turn right onto Solomons Island Rd/MD-2 then merge onto MD-665 East and stay straight to go onto Forest Drive. Turn left onto Hilltop Lane. Hilltop Lane becomes Tyler Avenue. Continue on Tyler Ave to Bay Ridge Avenue. Turn left onto Bay Ridge Avenue, then take first left onto Van Buren Street. Travel time from SCSC is 11 minutes, 6.6 miles.

Victoria Park Apartments, 87 Stewart Dr, Edgewater, MD 21037. 

Directions: These apartment are behind the WAWA on MD 2N.  From the SCSC get on Solomons Island Rd/MD-2N.  Turn Left onto Southdown Rd, Then turn Left onto Hazelwood Rd.  Then turn Right onto Stewart Dr.  Total travel time from SCSC is 3 minutes, 1.18 miles.

Centenary United Methodist Church, Shady Side Road, Shady Side, MD 20764

Directions: From SCSC turn right onto Stepneys Lane to Central Avenue/MD-214. Make a left on MD-214 and continue to second stoplight. Turn right onto Muddy Creek Road/MD468 and continue through two stoplights (at the second stoplight Muddy Creek Road becomes Shady Side Road). Continue on Shady Side Road for about two miles. Centenary Church is on the left.
